About Surat Municipal Corporation:
Surat Municipal Corporation is the local civic body responsible for the development of Surat, Gujarat.The Surat Municipal Corporation was established on 2 October 1966.Surat Municipal Corporation is a local self government which came into being under the provisions of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Act, 1949 carries out all the obligatory and discretionary functions prescribed thereunder.Surat Municipal Corporation is a local self government which came into being under the provisions of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Act, 1949 carries out all the obligatory and discretionary functions prescribed thereunder.The General Board is the Supreme Body of the Municipal Corporation constituted by elected members from each wards.The General Board has wide powers over all other authorities of the Corporation like Standing Committee and Municipal Commissioner.At present, there are 38 wards of this Surat Municipal Corporation, each ward consists 3 seats of councillor out of them 33% of seats are reserved for female.Each councilor is elected for a term of five years.
